In most yoga classes you will normally begin with a meditation or breathing practice (pranayama), to help settle the mind and body. You will then begin a warmup and a series of postures (asanas) that help to strengthen and stretch the body. Near the end of the class you will finish with relaxation and reflection and time for your mind to rest and body to restore.
If you have never tried yoga or have not been on your mat in a while, it is recommended you attend a beginners class or specific course, to get used to the basics and build up your confidence. You may wish to try new classes, as there are many different styles out there. See what works for you.
As with any new exercise you try, remember to listen to your body and always respect what it is saying to you. Move within your boundaries and if something doesn't feel right, do not force it. Your teacher is there to help, please don't be afraid to ask questions.
I'M NOT FLEXIBLE, CAN I STILL DO YOGA?
Of course! Yoga is not about being flexible and you don't have to be flexible to start. Over time you many gain flexibility and greater mobility, which is one of the benefits of practicing!
